Binevenagh Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty

Binevenagh AONB was designated in 2006. This is a re-designation and extension of the area previously designated in 1966 as the North Derry AONB. The distinctive headland of Binevenagh with its dramatic cliffs marks the western limit of the Antrim basalt plateau. From the Gortmore viewpoint there are spectacular panoramic views of Magilligan and Inishowen, Islay and Jura in Scotland, and Mussenden Temple and Martello Tower in the distance.

The Binevenagh Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is managed by the Causeway Coast & Glens Heritage Trust; a public/private/voluntary sector partnership established in May 2002 as an independent company limited by guarantee. It includes representation from Ballymena, Coleraine, Larne, Limavady, and Moyle Borough and District Councils in partnership with representatives from the environment, the community, the education, the farming and the tourism sectors.
